Cardio Self Defence Classes – Fighting Obesity and Unwanted Advances

Welcome to Cardio Self Defence. We have two aims, first to help give our children confidence to try and fight off any unwanted attack. Secondly, to improve the overall health and fitness of the children taking part in these self defence classes. The children will burn calories to become fitter, more confident and happier.

Classes

We offer core classes, one a week during term time – these can either be during the school day or after school at a club event. Different levels of activity and skills are taught for each year group, starting at year 7 up to and including year 11. We will monitor and record activities during this time to form part of any report where requested.

Self Defence

We need to protect our children because as they grow up the recent statistics show:
image 1 in 20 children in the UK have been sexually abused

Source: Radford, L. et al (2011) Child abuse and neglect in the UK today.

In 2012-13, 22,654 sexual offences against under-18s were reported to police in England and Wales with four out of five cases involving girls (NSPCC, 2014)

• Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts.
• Nearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year
• 1 in 5 women aged 16 - 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16
• Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police
• Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence

These figures come from An Overview of Sexual Offending in England and Wales, the first ever joint official statistics bulletin on sexual violence released by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Home Office in January 2013.

Child Obesity

The World Health Organization (WHO) regards childhood obesity as one of the most serious global public health challenges for the 21st century. Obese children and adolescents are at an increased risk of developing various health problems, and are also more likely to become obese adults.
image The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) measures the height and weight of around one million school children in England every year, providing a detailed picture of the prevalence of child obesity. The latest figures, for 2014/15, show that 19.1% of children in Year 6 (aged 10-11) were obese and a further 14.2% were overweight. Of children in Reception (aged 4-5), 9.1% were obese and another 12.8% were overweight. This means a third of 10-11 year olds and over a fifth of 4-5 year olds were overweight or obese.

Lets help improve these statistics with our classes.
